UCD Centre for Cultural Analytics is seeking applications for a number of doctoral scholarships to commence in the academic year 2021-22 as part of the ERC funded project, European Migrants in the British Imagination: Victorian and Neo-Victorian Culture (VICTEUR)
This project analyses the role of migration and migrants in the dynamics of cultural change and continuity, examining intra-European migration to Victorian Britain through a combination of literary scholarship and advanced text mining techniques. The first phase of the project will focus on 3 case studies – the representation and cultural production of Irish, Eastern European Jewish, and Italian migrants. The project will also examine in detail the relationship between gender and ethnic identities within the texts and the impact of authorial gender on representations of migrants by British and migrant writers.
Two doctoral scholarships are available in UCD Centre for Cultural Analytics to work on the VICTEUR project. Each PhD student will develop their own independent doctoral thesis, but will work within an interdisciplinary project team in the UCD School of English, Drama, and Film and SFI Insight Centre for Data Analytics. Doctoral students will join a vibrant interdisciplinary research community, with regular seminars, workshops, and symposia. All necessary training in digital methodologies and research communication will be provided, as will support for international conference participation. The scholarships will cover EU fees and a maintenance grant of €18,000 p.a. for 4 years.
